Is it Awurudu or Avurudu?
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I just realized the entire country has made a grammatical error this year when we wrote the phrase ‘Sinhala and Tamil New Year’. Because It should be Sinhalese and Tamils’ New Year.
Are the grammer Nazi’s laughing at our paid television, newspaper and social media advertisements? Should our professional English writers be humiliated or penalized for shaming us at such a grand scale? As someone who favours descriptivism [1] over prescriptivism [2] I believe we should all forgive each other for committing this unforgivable crime this festive season. Whether we write it as Awurudu, Avurudu, Avrudu, Awrudu, Sinhala New Year or Sinhalese New Year, we all know what the writer means.
